NASA Delays Artemis II Moon Mission After Discovering Helium Leak in Rocket

NASA has announced it will delay the launch of its Artemis II moon mission after discovering a helium flow issue in the Space Launch System rocket's upper stage. The setback comes as the agency was preparing for a potential March launch window, which would have marked humanity's return to lunar orbit after more than 50 years.

Technical Issue Discovered

The problem emerged during overnight testing on February 21, when teams observed an interrupted flow of helium to the SLS rocket's interim cryogenic propulsion stage. Following discovery of the issue, NASA officials announced they were taking steps to potentially roll back the Artemis II rocket and Orion spacecraft to the Vehicle Assembly Building at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

The rocket will be removed from the launchpad to allow technicians to investigate and fix the malfunctioning helium system. This technical challenge represents a significant hurdle for what was intended to be a historic mission.

Launch Window Moved

If the rollback occurs as anticipated, NASA indicates the launch to the moon would be delayed until at least April. This pushes back a mission that has already faced multiple delays, including an earlier postponement from February to March due to January's severe winter storm.

The Artemis II mission, while not intended to land on the moon, carries immense symbolic and practical importance. It would represent the first crewed lunar fly-by in over five decades.
